If you rent a generator to run a portable AC: never run it indoors, in a garage, or near an open window. Carbon monoxide from a generator is deadly and has no smell — keep it well outside and away from doors/windows.
Know the warning signs
Heat exhaustion vs. heat stroke
A hot house for a day or two is uncomfortable — it can also become dangerous, especially for kids, older adults, and anyone with a health condition. Know the difference.

Move to a cooler space, sip water, loosen clothing, apply cool cloths. Seek medical care if symptoms worsen or last over an hour.
Heat stroke — emergency
- Body temp above 103°F
- Hot, red, dry OR damp skin
- Fast, strong pulse
- Confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness
Call 911 immediately. Move to a cooler place and cool the body with wet cloths or a cool bath while you wait — do not give fluids if the person isn't fully alert.
