Symptoms That Mean Call Now
Not making ice at all. Ice production has slowed to a trickle. Ice is cloudy, foul-tasting, or smells off. Water pooling under or around the machine. The machine is short-cycling or throwing an error/fault light. Ice bridging together into one solid block instead of separating into cubes.
How We Diagnose an Ice Machine Problem
1. Water side
Scale buildup on the evaporator plate, a clogged or worn water filter, water inlet valve failure, and float switch issues are the most common non-refrigerant causes of low ice output and bad-tasting ice. We check water pressure and flow first — roughly 60% of “won’t make ice” calls are water-side, not refrigerant-side.
2. Refrigerant charge and airflow
We check superheat and subcooling against the manufacturer spec, inspect the condenser for dust and grease loading (a serious issue in kitchen environments), and confirm condenser fan operation. A dirty condenser is the single most common cause of slow ice production we find in restaurant kitchens.
3. Controls and sensors
Thermistors, bin control (bin thermostat or infrared bin sensor), and the control board itself can each cause a machine to stop cycling correctly or throw a fault code. We pull the fault history where the board supports it rather than guessing.
4. Harvest cycle and water distribution
A partial harvest, ice bridging, or an incomplete release usually points to the hot gas valve, the water distribution tube, or the ice thickness probe/sensor.

Repair or Replace?
Ice machines are a wear item, not a 20-year appliance. As a rule of thumb: if the compressor has failed on a unit past 8–10 years old, or you are on your second major refrigerant-side repair inside two years, replacement is usually the better financial call than another repair. Water-side repairs (filters, valves, scale) are almost always worth doing regardless of age. We will tell you which category your repair falls into before we quote it, not after.

How fast can you get to a restaurant with a dead ice machine?
In most cases, same day. Call rather than email — we prioritize food-service refrigeration and ice failures over routine comfort-cooling calls.
Can you just add refrigerant to get us through service tonight?
We can as a stopgap, but a machine that needs refrigerant has a leak. We will get you through tonight and then find and quote the actual leak repair.
Why is our ice cloudy or bad-tasting?
Almost always a water-side issue — scale on the evaporator, an overdue water filter, or a water quality problem, not the refrigeration system. We check both.
Do you work on remote-condenser (split) ice machines, or only self-contained?
Both. Remote-condenser systems need the same superheat/subcooling checks as any split refrigeration system, plus attention to line set sizing and oil return.
What refrigerants do you handle?
R-404A and R-410A on most current equipment, R-22 on older units. EPA 608 certified; we recover on every open-system repair.
